Australia Urged to Mandate Tyre Pressure Monitoring for Heavy Vehicles
Leading road safety expert Dr Peter Hart has called on Australia to mandate Tyre Monitoring Systems (TPMS) and Tyre Pressure Refill Systems (TPRS) across the heavy-vehicle sector, highlighting both the safety and economic benefits of proper tyre management.
In his recent Prime Mover Magazine article, Tyre Pressure Management Advantages in Australia, Dr Hart notes that Australia has “more tyres on an average truck than any other country on earth,” making the advantages of accurate tyre (pressure and temeprature) monitoring particularly compelling.
Under UN ECE Regulation R141, Europe already requires new heavy vehicles and trailers to be fitted with TPMS, with TPRS as an approved option. These systems alert drivers when a tyre is under- inflated and can automatically restore pressure within minutes. Hart argues that Australia- which typically harmonises with UN standards- should commit to introducing similar rules by 2028.
Beyond compliance, the benefits are clear. Correct tyre pressure optimises braking and handling, cuts fuel consumption, reduces emissions, and extends tyre life.
Also correct monitoring of wheel temperatures reduces the risk of wheel end fires, explosions (pyrolysis) and increases safety - especially for DG transport.
Australian fleets adopting TPMS and TPRS now will not only improve safety, reduces fuel / tyre costs and efficiency but also future- proof their operations against upcoming regulatory changes.
At LSM Technologies, we have long shared this vision for >20 years. Our TyreGuard® TMSystems are designed to meet and exceed R141 standards - delivering continuous pressure, temperature, and performance data for every wheel position, across even the most complex multi- trailer combinations.
Proactive tyre management is not just good maintenance- ii is critical safety technology.
