The inherent safety risks associated with managing wheels and tyres on heavy machinery is nothing new to industry Many Operators understand this and have taken proactive action to mitigate such risks by using the latest in Tyre Management / Monitoring Technology.
Over the past few years- and most recently in 2015- there has been several tyre-related incidents and accidents which sadly have resulted in fatalities / Injuries.
The recent Coroner’s Report investigated the processes for checking tyre pressures using “tyre tapping” and concluded that such method could not accurately determine an under- inflated tyre, which is deemed as such by as little as 4% reduction in the specific tyre pressure.
As anyone involved with managing wheels and tyres knows, maintaining the correct tyre inflation pressures is critical for a safe operation and prolonging tyre life. However, the job of checking tyre pressures can be a dangerous and laborious task in itself, as it puts you in close proximity to a high pressure vessel, which can be unpredictable.
