In a day and age where smoking (particulate >0.5µ) is barred from work and public places, industries there still seems to be a lack of understanding about the extent and ramifications of Workplace Exposure to Airborne Particulate and Fibre of harmful / carcinogenic “dusts” that causes workplace respiratory disease.

Experts say exposure to diesel fumes is Australia’s second most prevalent work-based cancer-causing agent and warn those who work with diesel-powered engines, vehicles and machinery to be aware of the associated risks of lung cancer.

RCS (Respirable Crystalline Silica) is found at varying levels in all dusts, especially within the Mining, Quarrying, Construction, Agriculture, Cement, Crushing and Earthmoving Industries. However, compliance is not just about exposure to RCS but also providing protection against other harmful types of contamination "nasties" such as asbestos, nickel, alumina, coal, iron ore, pesticides, herbicides, etc. DPM (Diesel Particulate Matter) exposure is also a major concern and according to the ACS (American Cancer Society) and SafeWork Australia and is a Class1 carcinogen. 

A major misconception is that Operators in Enclosed Cabins of Fixed and Mobile Plant are protected against these harmful substances. In fact, concentration of contamination can be worse within the Cabin and can far exceed the outside air quality.

Australian and International Standards (eg ISO 23875) require that all Enclosed Cabins must be equipped with Cabin Pressuriser / Filtration Systems and that they are configured to comply with:

  • External Air Filtration: HEPA >H13 / H35 filtration class according to EN1822 / ISO 29463. External Air must provide fresh air to the HVAC Evaporator Plenum and not directly to the Cabin.
  • Recirculation Air Filtration: HEPA >H13 / H35 filtration class according to EN1822 / ISO 29463. Recirculation Unit must conform to particulate inside the Cabin of <0.025 μg/ m3 at start / end of decay test, maximum of 120 seconds decay time.
  • Exposure Levels: Cabin is to be periodically tested to ensure that occupant exposure levels are maintained at <0.05mg / m3 TWA for an 8-hour shift and 0.025 mg / m3 for a 12-hour shift (eg to Brief and Scala calculation). Definition of  HEPA to Australian Standards (refer AS 4260- 1997) is to provide an arrestance of particulate size >0.3 micron at 99.97% efficiency.
  • Co2 Concentration: Maintain safe levels of Co2  below 700ppm (AIRHA) - excessive Co2 causes premature fatigue, lack of concentration, microsleeps, etc.
  • Cabin Pressurisation:  Cabin pressurisation >20-50 pascal with the HVAC turned off and must not exceed 200 pascals.
  • In- Cabin monitoring / Warning Device:  Cab Pressurisation and Co2 levels monitored by permanently installed monitoring system using the Advisor Plus®.
  • Life Cycle Testing / Compliance Checks: Conduct routine performance testing of air quality control system throughout the lifecycle of the Cabin to maintain compliance. Testing cab pressure, CO2 concentration & External  + Recirculation filtration effectiveness at machine service intervals.

QCABAIR® (pat.pend) provides for optimising the entire Cabin Environmental Conditions with specific benefits as:

  • Compliance: Exceeds Australian (eg QLD Recognised Standard RS20 + RS15) and International ISO 23875 compliance. 
  • Co2 Concentration / Ventilation: Ensures adequate and constant exhaust air flow / ventilation (especially for multiple occupants). Fresh air flow required to off- set Co2- AIRAH 10-15 l / seconds (20-30 CFM) / occupant.
  • Cabin Pressurisation: Optimum Cabin pressurisation to 50-150 pascal and will not over- pressurise cabin.
  • Filter Element Service Life: Uses Extended Length Filter Elements to provide less frequent filter exchange- again maximising Filter service life. 
  • Recirculation Air Filtration: Highest Recirculation Air Filtration with >120 CFM (3.4 m3/ min) of entrapped contamination. Considering an average Cabin volume, the Recirculation filtration will cycle the Cabin 1 x 60 seconds.
  • Thermal Comfort: As the Core Plenum mixes the External Air (ambient temperature) and Recirculation Air (pre- cooled)  then optimum comfort is provided for the Cabin.
  • HVAC Service Life: Clean Air in the Cabin also means extended service life of the HVAC Evaporator. Also Mixing of the External and Recirculation Air provides balanced dynamic loading of the HVAC. 
  • Balances External / Recirculation Air: Mixes both air sources to optimise HVAC dynamics. 
  • Rapid Filtration of Recirculation Air: Entrapped Contamination enters via Operator’s clothing / boots, opening of doors / windows, etc.
  • In Cabin Monitor: Provides Monitoring of Co2 & Cabin Pressurisation. 
  • Self- cleaning Filter Elements: Due to RESPA® External Air Filtration Unit is also a powerful Pre- cleaner that ejects >95% Particulate back to environment before loading Filter media- extending Filter Element service life.
  • Filter Elements: Specifically designed Filter Elements for Gas, Asbestos, RCS, DPM (diesel particle) and Odour Filtration.
  • Telemetry Data: Data also sent back via LSM Technologies FSM® Fleet Safety Management Telemetry System for recording, alerting, reporting, validation of performance / compliance.

More than 7 million Australians are currently living with lung conditions. Chronic lower respiratory diseases are the fifth leading cause of death in Australia. Around 2.7 million Australians – 11 per cent of the population – have asthma.

Launched in February 2019, the National Strategic Action Plan for Lung Conditions is a nationally co-ordinated effort to address the lung health of Australians.
